The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of Samsung top-load washing machines due to the risk of impact injuries. The washing machine top can unexpectedly and forcefully detach from the washing machine chassis during use posing a risk of injury.
The recall involves 34 models of Samsung top-load washing machines. The washing machines have mid-controls or rear-controls. Model numbers and serial information can be located on two labels affixed to the back of the machine.
Samsung received 733 reports of washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching from the chassis. There are nine related reports of injuries, including a broken jaw, injured shoulder, and other impact or fall related injuries.
Firefighters should be aware of this household hazard when responding to a report of a loud vibration or explosion in the basement, do not always assume the explosion to be a delayed ignition in an oil burner. Precaution should be taken when approaching these washers when in operation. Immediately shut down the unit and disconnect the power. At least if you come across an incident of an “exploding washer”, you will have a better understanding of what may have happened and you can ask the homeowner “Is this a Samsung washer?”
